An Analysis of The Theft Punishment in the Quran

Islamofascists seem to have a great fetish for limb amputation. This punishment for theft in Traditional Islam is thought by some magical process to transform Muslim societies into ones filled with justice. Funnily, this has never happened in practice. Proponents of this punishment (known as sariqah in Sharia terminology) cite the Quran Chapter 5 Verse 38 to make their case. However, I believe that this is nothing more than a deliberately literal reading in order to repeat injunctions made in the Bible. The Bible is a great influence in Sharia law. Its influenced disguises itself as Hadith literature, thus acquiring legitimisation from Prophet Muhammad. Punishments for apostasy, adultery, blasphemy and normative religious practices like the hijab, the beard, saying ‘amen’ in prayers all come from the Bible. Ironically, while Christians themelves have left these practices for the most part, Traditional Muslims cling to them passionately.

    and if i’m not mistaken, the article is about an analysis from quran, but from i just read, most of it only talks about what is in bible and not from the Quran girl. I think u should study more about the law of Islam before you post this analysis honey.

      This is an analysis from Farouk A. Peru that I reblogged. Also, the article focuses on the nature of the Arabic words found in the Qur’an. Maybe you should read more thoroughly before commenting. Just a thought🙂

    This Farouk person is quite an amusing person. He got a few things right but at the same time he got the wrong idea of the whole thing at the end. He showed little understanding of the Arabic linguistics and made jumps into the science of tafsir which he failed spectacularly in understanding and explaining it. From what I picked up, his source of knowledge is the Bible, Quran, and the Arabic dictionary. The rest of his knowledge are based on his own assumptions or ‘analysis’ which for us is a very dodgy thing to trust knowing full well that he is not a scholar. I can’t trust this person who can’t even understand that the Bible have no influence in the creation of the Shari’a law.

    I spent almost two years studying in a bible college at Ashfield know full well that the law and punishments in the bible is taken from the last testament (the torah) & a few made by Paul. Also the bible is not written nor published by Jesus (peace be upon him) and also not from any of his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). ~90% of the bible as we know it is from Paul and his disciples who were the great enemies of Jesus (peace be upon him) & his followers. It is not even a secret because everything that Paul wrote contradicts with the message of Jesus (peace be upon him) in the bible itself.

    The science of interpretation (tafsir) requires an understanding of the Classical Arabic language (and grammar) & the proper approach (adab) to unveil the meanings. The tafsir from what my sheikh said have more than one levels. I said more than one levels because I can’t remember the exact number of levels he told me.

    Literal translation is level one of the tafsir. I can tell you one of the shortest chapter (sura’), al-‘Asr (chapter 103), took about 2 hours of lecture to explain it.

    Also please be mindful of from whom you get your knowledge from. Translations are to be viewed with much care and understanding that it is made based on the translator’s perception & understanding of the scripture. It is recommended we ourselves learn the language and look at the scripture ourselves.

    You need to consult the scholars of the religion about this matter. I explained about the rules of the Shari’a in my reply on your “Why I Do Not Agree With Hudud In Malaysia” article. If you understand how Shari’a works, you will understand that not all theft are considered as hadd (worst punishable crime). Again you need to learn further into it to understand. No harm in learning, just spend some time for it.

    I don’t know how credible the uztaz & scholars are in Malaysia as a whole, but I do know a couple of sheikh and an uztaz in Malaysia that I trust who had the right knowledge and understanding.

    Seek out Sheikh Hussein Yee, Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, and uztaz Firdaus Wong Wai Hung for advice and answers.

    As my last advice to end this yet again long reply, please don’t consult sheikh google and any sheikh wiki for answers. Seek the righteous scholars of the religion, for they are the inheritors of the Prophets (peace be upon them). Perhaps with great steadfastness and faith in our Creator, you might become one of the scholars as well when you yourself seek and learn the right knowledge.

    i knew farouk in-person. he speaks arab, he read quran in arabic. it’s quite ‘amusing’ when someone judged a person just based on his writings.

    yeah yeah, based on my ustaz, my sheikh, not everyone could understand quran.

      I must first apologise to the founder of this blog for this outburst. I am obligated to correct those who misunderstood my comments.

      Brother, it saddens me to see you say that not everyone could understand Quran. Our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) did not leave us without having the Quran understood and memorized by his companions and scholars.

      All we need to do is learn. For we are taught to learn our religion from the chest of our scholars. We have many scholars out there for us to seek and learn from. Don’t just learn from one scholar, learn from two, three or more if you can. We should be grateful such people are still around to learn from for at the nearing of the end-time these will be the first among the people to be extinct.

      Also not all Arabs know how to interpret the Quran and this have been proven throughout times. Historically it was during the reign of Ali ibn Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), that Arabic grammar was penned and taught to new generation of Arabs. You can do your own research on this for more details on how the Arabs lost their linguistic prowess.

      Yes, they can read, but they couldn’t fully comprehend and grasp the meaning without learning the language themselves. The science of tafsir as stated is not as simple as you think it is. It isn’t hard either with the right knowledge.

      I am not referring to shiekhs purely by their words; for they speak on the basis of the Quran and references of the hadiths (which your friend Farouk does not support). Their knowledge is further supported by the teachings of the mushtahid (diligent) Imams from the likes of Hanafiyy, Malik, and Shafiyy.

      Ignorance is a form of oppression. It will harm you and those around you. This does not only apply in religion but in worldly knowledge as well.

      A simple example: Do you think you can operate a heart surgery by reading through medical books alone?

      As for your friend, I did not judge his character and personality. He’s probably a nice guy in person. I just judged his academic articles and depth of knowledge. I am entitled to opinions and comments just like you are on me.

      Farouk is well known for his works. I know he is an anti-hadith and only believe in the Quran. He didn’t study the bible enough to make judgements on it nor to compare it with the Quran. So my opinions are not baseless, and based on his article, I understood the bible more than him at least.

      Consider what I said brother, and I hope you gain further understanding and wisdom on this matter.
